A Word From Our Founder and CEO, Jennifer Burns Katafigiotis, MS
When asked how I came up with WWC KIDS, the answer took a lot of thought. In truth, WWC KIDS was in the making from the moment my daughter was born. I looked at this beautiful young life and knew that I would establish so many important foundations in her life, including her relationship with food. I looked at her as a blank canvas; I was the artist, a fork my paintbrush and food my paint. I would paint the picture that would detail her relationship with food. It was a job I took seriously and continue to do so today for her and for your child too.
During my graduate studies in Nutrition Education and Food Science, I was attending a class taught by Dr. Doreen Liou, EdD when she quoted from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
“According to the CDC, children born after the year 2000 will be the first generation of Americans to die at an earlier age than their parents if the overweight and obesity epidemic is not addressed.”
I wrote that quote in my notebook, circled it, added a star, an asterisk, underlined it. It resonated with me. It haunted me. It still does. I didn’t know it at that time, but that is the moment when Weight Wellness Center KIDS (WWC KIDS) was born. That was in 2008 and I have focused my research and time on children’s weight status and nutrition ever since.
It’s 2018 and WWC KIDS is the first of its kind — an evidence-based pediatric weight management program founded in nutrition education and behavior modification and licensed to the pediatric healthcare community. Your pediatrician, that important member of your “family” that you entrust your child’s health to, will now be able to guide their nutrition and weight management through the WWC KIDS program, right in their office!
